Chennai, 28th May: A scheduled meeting between Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and senior Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi has been postponed and is likely to take place next week, according to sources.
The meeting was scheduled for 10 am on Thursday but was deferred late Wednesday night. The reasons for the postponement were not immediately disclosed.
The development came a day after Vijay met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during his visit to New Delhi.
During his meeting with the Prime Minister, Vijay raised several issues concerning Tamil Nadu, including the Mekedatu balancing reservoir project proposed by Karnataka, the arrest of Tamil Nadu fishermen by Sri Lankan authorities and the controversy surrounding the Tamil Thai Vazhthu invocation song.
Vijay reportedly conveyed serious concerns over Karnataka’s announcement regarding the Mekedatu project across the Cauvery river, stating that the move was against the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal and Supreme Court directives. He said the issue had caused anxiety among farmers in Tamil Nadu.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the issue of fishermen arrests, pointing out that 58 fishermen from Tamil Nadu are currently in Sri Lankan custody while 266 boats have been seized so far in 2026.
A controversy had also erupted over the sequence of playing the Tamil Thai Vazhthu during Vijay’s swearing-in ceremony, where it was played after Vande Mataram and the National Anthem. In a letter to the Prime Minister, Vijay said Tamil Nadu has always upheld the dignity of national symbols and emphasised the historical importance of the Tamil invocation song in the state’s public life.
In his meeting with Sitharaman, Vijay submitted a memorandum seeking priority funding for ports, highways, railway projects and industrial corridors crucial for Tamil Nadu’s development.
He also requested establishment of Institutes of National Importance in the state and sought financial assistance for metro rail projects in cities including Coimbatore, Madurai and Erode.
Vijay’s Delhi visit comes shortly after he won the trust vote in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, strengthening his position as head of the state’s first coalition government in decades. His party, the TVK, emerged as the single-largest party in the Assembly elections and formed the government with support from Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK and IUML.
