New Delhi, 7th July: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday witnessed the signing of a historic agreement resolving long-pending payment disputes among Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh related to the Sardar Sarovar Project under the Narmada Award.
The agreement, signed in the presence of Union Jal Shakti Minister C. R. Patil and the chief ministers of the four states, provides a one-time settlement of pending financial dues linked to the project’s cost-sharing arrangements.
Describing the agreement as a major example of cooperative federalism, Shah said the Modi government has taken several initiatives to strengthen water security and resolve long-pending inter-state disputes. He said recent settlements involving the Kishau Dam Project and the Rajasthan-Haryana water dispute reflected the same spirit of cooperation.
Shah said the Sardar Sarovar Project has transformed agriculture and water availability in beneficiary states and stressed that regardless of where the water is used, “the ultimate beneficiary is an Indian.” He urged states to resolve disputes through consensus while keeping national interest at the forefront.
