In a significant political development, Chief Minister Champai Soren’s government in the Indian state of Jharkhand has emerged victorious in a decisive floor test held on Monday (Feb 5). The confidence motion garnered the support of 47 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), solidifying the stability and confidence of Soren’s administration in the state assembly.

The trust vote commenced with the notable presence of former Chief Minister Hemant Soren, who had been arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with an alleged land scam case. Despite his legal entanglements, Hemant Soren, also the president of the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), was permitted to participate in the floor test following a ruling by a special court in Ranchi.

In the Jharkhand assembly, the coalition known as INDIA commands 47 seats, while the opposition National Democratic Alliance (NDA) holds 32 seats. The ruling JMM, a pivotal part of the INDIA alliance, possesses 28 seats.

Key Updates from the Floor Test:

– Assembly Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahato confirmed the victory of Champai Soren’s government, announcing that 47 votes were in favor of the confidence motion, while 29 were opposed. “This House passes the trust vote,” Speaker Mahato declared before adjourning the session till 11 am on Tuesday.

– CM Champai Soren, in his address to the assembly, accused the Modi government at the Centre of misusing its agencies, highlighting alleged injustices against Hemant Soren. “Today the whole country is seeing how injustice is being done to Hemant Soren,” remarked CM Champai during the proceedings.

– JMM General Secretary Supriyo Bhattacharya had expressed confidence in securing victory in the floor test, asserting his party’s anticipation of support from a minimum of 47 MLAs.

– Ahead of the floor test, authorities imposed Section 144 near the Jharkhand legislative assembly in Ranchi, indicating the significance and sensitivity of the proceedings.

Moreover, the presence of Hemant Soren and the return of MLAs from the JMM-led alliance, who were previously relocated to Hyderabad to prevent poaching, underscored the intense political dynamics surrounding the floor test.

Reacting to the government’s triumph, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh expressed confidence, stating, “There was no doubt. We were saying beforehand that we would win this Trust Vote with a good majority.”

Ramesh further added, “BJP’s attempts of first arresting Hemant Soren, then delaying Champai Soren’s oath for two days… have all been foiled. BJP has failed, and our coalition government will continue for a year. After that, we will once again seek the people’s mandate based on our work.”
