WASHINGTON – Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that he received a call from his “friend” President Donald Trump of the United States.
During their telephonic conversation, both leaders discussed the prevailing situation in West Asia and reviewed the progress achieved in the bilateral relations between the two countries.
Modi said that they both stressed the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and secure.
He posted about the conversation on X, said that they both stressed the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and secure.
“Received a call from my friend President Donald Trump. We reviewed the substantial progress achieved in our bilateral cooperation in various sectors. We are committed to further strengthening our Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership in all areas. We also discussed the situation in West Asia and stressed the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and secure,” Modi said.
The 40-minute phone call reportedly ended with Trump telling the Prime Minister: “I just want you to know we all love you.”
This is the second time Trump has called Prime Minister Modi in less than a fortnight.
Trump had spoken to PM Modi last month when the conflict in the Middle East was rising.
PM Modi had reiterated that New Delhi “supports de-escalation and restoration of peace at the earliest.”
“Ensuring that the Strait of Hormuz remains open, secure and accessible is essential for the whole world,” Modi had told Trump.
The development came a day after the US Navy’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz came into effect.
Trump had announced the move after peace talks with Iran held in Islamabad collapsed.
The development also follows reports of a second round of negotiations between the US and Iran.
According to media reports both countries could return to Islamabad this week for further negotiations.
It said that a fresh proposal has been shared with both Iran and the US to resend their delegations even as no date has been finalized for the meeting with delegations from Tehran and Washington keeping Friday through Sunday open.
