Chennai, 13th June: A major road in Chennai will soon bear the name of Ashoka Chakra awardee Major Mukund Varadharajan in recognition of his sacrifice and distinguished service to the nation.

The Tambaram City Municipal Corporation Council has passed a resolution to rename the nearly 15-kilometre stretch connecting East Tambaram and Velachery as “Major Mukund Varadharajan Road.”

The decision follows a proposal initiated by the Director of Municipal Administration, who, in August 2025, wrote to the Tambaram Corporation recommending that the Tambaram–Velachery Road be renamed in honour of the decorated Army officer.

Subsequently, approval was sought from the Principal Secretary to the Government, Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department, to place the proposal before the Corporation Council. The Tamil Nadu government granted permission through a communication dated October 23, 2025, paving the way for the formal resolution.

Following the state’s approval, the Corporation Council unanimously adopted the resolution to rename the road within the jurisdiction of the Tambaram City Municipal Corporation.

Major Mukund Varadharajan was killed in action during a counter-terrorism operation in Jammu and Kashmir in 2014. For displaying exceptional courage and leadership in the line of duty, he was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry award.

A native of Tamil Nadu, Major Mukund completed his higher education at the prestigious Madras Christian College (MCC) in Tambaram before joining the Indian Army.

His life story and supreme sacrifice recently reached a wider audience through the critically acclaimed Tamil film Amaran, which brought national attention to his bravery and dedication to the country.

The renaming of the road is being viewed as a tribute to the soldier’s enduring legacy and a reminder of the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces in safeguarding the nation.
