Srinagar, 26th May: A massive anti-terror operation entered its third day on Tuesday in the dense Gambhir Mughlan forests of Rajouri, where security forces have reportedly cornered three suspected Pakistani terrorists hiding in rugged terrain near the border belt.
The operation, codenamed “Op Sheruwali”, is being jointly carried out by the Indian Army’s Romeo Force, the Central Reserve Police Force, Special Operations Group and the Jammu and Kashmir Police.
Officials said troops have established a multi-layered cordon around the dense forest region and deployed drones, helicopters and advanced surveillance systems to monitor possible escape routes.
The operation began around 11.30 am on May 24 after intelligence inputs indicated the presence of terrorists in the Dorimal-Gambhir Mughlan belt.
According to the Army’s White Knight Corps, troops engaged the terrorists in a firefight soon after contact was established before tightening the cordon around the area.
Additional reinforcements have since been rushed to strengthen the operation.
Sources said security forces also fired at two locations within the forest in an attempt to provoke the terrorists into revealing their positions, though no response was received.
Officials stated that the search operation continued through the night, with forces maintaining uninterrupted surveillance to deny the terrorists any opportunity to escape under the cover of darkness.
Security agencies believe all three suspected terrorists are Pakistani nationals.
The terrorists are believed to have taken shelter deep inside thick forest cover, prompting forces to proceed cautiously to avoid collateral damage.
“Troops are moving slowly into the forest to neutralise the three terrorists,” a senior security officer said.
Officials added that the same group had earlier managed to evade security forces, but authorities now believe the chances of escape are significantly lower due to intensified surveillance and tightened cordons.
The operation remains underway.
