THANJAVUR, 17th Aug: Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan on Monday described the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 as the guiding pillar of India’s educational transformation from kindergarten to doctoral studies while addressing the Ruby and Silver Jubilee Valedictory Celebrations of SASTRA Deemed University in Thanjavur.
Congratulating the university on its academic milestones, the Vice President said the jubilee reflected SASTRA’s remarkable growth, its contribution to higher education and its aspirations for greater excellence in the years ahead. He described the institution as one of Tamil Nadu’s leading centres of higher learning and praised its role in national development.
Highlighting the Centre’s education reforms, Shri Radhakrishnan said flagship initiatives such as the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship (PMRF), PM-Vidyalaxmi and the Multiple Entry-Multiple Exit framework have strengthened India’s higher education ecosystem.
Referring to the recently enacted Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, the Vice President said the legislation reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring a fair, transparent and credible examination system that protects the interests of honest students.
Expressing confidence in India’s educational progress, he said the country’s Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in higher education is expected to rise from the current 30 per cent to 50 per cent by 2035, expanding access to quality education across the country.
The Vice President also emphasised the importance of building sovereign technological capabilities through research, innovation and industry partnerships. He welcomed SASTRA University’s collaboration with Tata Communications in cybersecurity and networking, describing it as a significant step towards strengthening India’s digital security infrastructure.
Urging students to make productive use of their time, Shri Radhakrishnan called on them to focus on innovation, continuous skill upgradation and lifelong learning while limiting excessive social media use. He also appealed to young people to stay away from narcotic drugs, saying, “Say no to narcotic drugs. Say Yes to Your Health and Say Yes to Your Life.”
During the event, the Vice President launched six new initiatives of SASTRA University, including the TATA Communications Centre for Resilient and Unified Secure Technologies (TRUST), SASTRA.AI, SASTRA-MAITRI, STRIDE Fund, DRISHTI, and SMILE, aimed at promoting research, artificial intelligence, faculty development, digital education and international collaboration.
He said these initiatives align closely with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, strengthening infrastructure, research, innovation, entrepreneurship and industry-academia collaboration while preparing the next generation to contribute to India’s development journey.
