New Delhi, 26th May: Prime Minister Narendra Modi showcased India’s rich tribal heritage and traditional craftsmanship by presenting specially curated cultural gifts to world leaders during his recent diplomatic tour.
According to the government, the gifts reflected India’s diverse tribal traditions, handloom legacy and indigenous artistic excellence.
A traditional Gond painting from Madhya Pradesh was presented to Crown Princess Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden.
The Gond art form, created by the Gond tribal community, is known for intricate dot-and-line patterns and vibrant natural colours and continues to support tribal artisans and local livelihoods.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni received a traditional Muga Silk stole from Assam along with a Shirui Lily stole crafted by the Tangkhul Naga community of Manipur.
Officials said Muga silk, known for its natural golden sheen, is a GI-tagged textile tradition preserved for centuries by tribal weaving communities.
The Shirui Lily stole draws inspiration from Manipur’s rare state flower and reflects the cultural identity of the Tangkhul Naga tribe.
Her Majesty the Queen Mother of the United Arab Emirates was gifted Black Rice, popularly known as Chak-Hao, from Manipur.
The heritage grain is traditionally cultivated by tribal hill communities and is valued for its nutritional and medicinal properties.
Officials said the diplomatic gifts were aimed at highlighting India’s tribal craftsmanship, handloom traditions and cultural heritage on the global stage.
The initiative also reflects the government’s focus on promoting indigenous artisans and preserving traditional knowledge systems through cultural diplomacy.
