Railways Approves ₹497 Cr Chouk-Karjat Doubling Project

New Delhi, 18th Sept: Indian Railways has approved the doubling of the 10.86-km Chouk-Karjat railway section of Central Railway in Maharashtra at an estimated cost of ₹497 crore, in a move aimed at increasing rail capacity and improving train operations.
The Chouk-Karjat section is part of the Panvel-Chouk-Karjat route, an important corridor for both passenger and freight movement. The project will add a second line to the existing single-line stretch, enabling smoother movement of trains along the corridor.
According to the project plan, the doubling is expected to facilitate five additional passenger trains in each direction every day after completion. The project is also projected to support an additional 18.35 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of freight traffic.
The additional line is expected to improve the movement of freight trains and reduce their detention, thereby enhancing the overall efficiency of the railway network in the region.
The project has been approved under umbrella works covering doubling, tripling, quadrupling, flyovers and bypasses aimed at augmenting railway capacity.
The Chouk-Karjat doubling project is part of Indian Railways’ broader efforts to strengthen infrastructure, expand network capacity and facilitate more efficient passenger and freight transportation across Maharashtra.
