You Want Us to Dictate What CM Should Do?: SC Raps SMK

Top Court Says It Cannot Regulate Chief Minister's Speeches in Karur Stampede Case

New Delhi, 7th July: The Supreme Court on Tuesday rebuked the DMK over its plea seeking restrictions on Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay’s speeches and public visits in connection with the September 2025 Karur stampede case.

A bench of Justices K.V. Viswanathan and Alok Aradhe questioned the maintainability of the plea, observing that the court could not dictate what a chief minister should say or do. “Chief Minister Vijay is not an accused,” the bench remarked, adding that the Supreme Court could not be used to settle political disputes while a CBI investigation was underway.

Following the court’s observations, the DMK sought permission to withdraw the petition, which was allowed.

The opposition party had argued that Vijay’s proposed July 10 visit to Karur and statements by TVK leaders could influence witnesses in the ongoing CBI probe into the stampede that claimed 41 lives during a political event in September 2025.

The CBI is continuing its investigation into the incident after taking over the case on the Supreme Court’s directions.
