New Delhi, 22nd April: A major political controversy erupted after Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “terrorist” during a press conference, before later clarifying that he meant the Prime Minister was “terrorising people and political parties.”
The remarks came while Kharge was criticising the AIADMK’s alliance with the BJP ahead of the Tamil Nadu elections.
Following sharp reactions, Kharge said his statement had been misunderstood.
“I never called the Prime Minister a terrorist. What I meant is that he is terrorising people and political parties,” he said, alleging that central agencies were being used to exert pressure on opponents.
The Bharatiya Janata Party reacted strongly, accusing the Congress of using abusive language and targeting the Prime Minister.
BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari termed the Congress an “Urban Naxal Party” and criticised what he called repeated “venomous rhetoric.”
Union Minister Piyush Goyal demanded an apology, calling the remark an insult to both the Prime Minister and the electorate.
He said such comments undermine democratic values and disrespect the mandate of the people.
The controversy comes amid heightened political tensions following the debate over the Women’s Reservation Bill, with both sides exchanging sharp attacks.
Kharge also defended the Congress-DMK alliance, stating it would continue to focus on welfare, inclusive growth, education and healthcare.
The incident has further intensified the political war of words between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress, with both sides trading accusations ahead of key elections.
