Mumbai/Cleveland, 11th June: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday said the state’s ambitious ‘Medicity’ initiative will create a world-class healthcare ecosystem by integrating patient care, medical education, research, innovation and talent development within a single campus.

Fadnavis made the remarks as the Maharashtra government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Cleveland Clinic, Brookfield Asset Management and Arohan Health City for the development of the Navi Mumbai International Medicity (NMIMC), a project expected to attract an investment of $1.2 billion.

Joining the event through video conferencing from Mumbai, the Chief Minister said the project aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Heal in India” and will position Maharashtra as a global healthcare destination.

“Today’s agreement marks the beginning of a transformative journey for India’s healthcare sector. We are proud that Cleveland Clinic, one of the world’s most respected healthcare institutions, has chosen to partner with Maharashtra for this landmark initiative,” Fadnavis said.

The Navi Mumbai International Medicity is planned as India’s first globally benchmarked integrated hub for healthcare services, research, medical education and medical tourism. The project will be developed on nearly 250 acres of land near the Navi Mumbai International Airport.

Under the partnership, Cleveland Clinic will serve as the anchor institution, contributing its global expertise in advanced healthcare delivery, medical education, research, innovation and patient-centred care.

The project is expected to create more than 10,000 direct jobs while attracting global investments into the healthcare and life sciences sectors.

According to officials, the integrated ecosystem will include world-class hospitals, medical and nursing colleges, clinical research centres, biotechnology and life sciences facilities, artificial intelligence-driven healthcare innovation platforms, wellness infrastructure and allied health services.

Fadnavis said the Medicity project is designed not merely as a healthcare facility but as a comprehensive ecosystem that will drive innovation, research and economic growth while improving access to high-quality healthcare.

As part of the broader innovation ecosystem around Medicity, the LNM Institute of Information Technology (LNMIIT), Jaipur, founded by industrialist Lakshmi N. Mittal, has also expressed interest in collaborating with Cleveland Clinic and NMIMC in areas such as translational research, artificial intelligence and precision medicine.

Cleveland Clinic President and CEO Dr Tom Mihaljevic said the institution remains committed to advancing patient care, medical education and research through strategic global partnerships.

“NMIMC presents an opportunity to contribute our expertise to a visionary healthcare ecosystem designed to meet the future needs of patients, healthcare professionals and researchers,” he said.

Brookfield Managing Partner and Head of Real Estate for Asia Pacific Ankur Gupta described the project as a unique opportunity to create infrastructure with long-term social and economic impact.

Arohan Health City Founder and Director Dr Saloni Patwardhan said bringing together leading global institutions under one integrated healthcare ecosystem had always been the organisation’s vision.

The Maharashtra government said it would facilitate the project by providing policy support and assisting in obtaining all necessary approvals and clearances in accordance with applicable regulations.

Officials said the Navi Mumbai International Medicity is expected to emerge as one of India’s largest integrated healthcare and life sciences ecosystems, bringing together healthcare providers, researchers, educators, innovators and investors on a single collaborative platform.
