NEW DELHI, 3rd July: India and Japan on Thursday unveiled an ambitious roadmap to deepen cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI), agreeing to work together on AI governance, research, cybersecurity, talent development and resilient digital infrastructure as both countries seek to strengthen their strategic technology partnership.
The joint statement, issued during Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s visit to India, described AI as an “era-defining” technology and reaffirmed the commitment of both countries to build a safe, secure, trustworthy, inclusive and human-centric AI ecosystem that promotes innovation while addressing emerging risks.
Both sides agreed to institutionalise regular India-Japan AI Strategic Dialogues following the inaugural meeting held earlier this year. They also pledged closer coordination on international AI governance through platforms including the G20, OECD, Global Partnership on AI (GPAI) and the United Nations.
The two countries will strengthen cooperation on AI-enabled cybersecurity, secure digital infrastructure, semiconductors, data centres and resilient supply chains, while expanding joint research between governments, academia and industry. The partnership also covers multilingual AI models, open-source technologies, AI for scientific research and public-interest applications.
India and Japan welcomed several agreements between research institutions and technology companies, including collaborations involving IIT Bombay, BharatGen Technology Foundation, the National Institute of Informatics of Japan, Sarvam and Preferred Networks to develop advanced AI technologies.
The leaders also reaffirmed the target of bringing 500 highly skilled Indian AI professionals to Japan by 2030, while expanding joint research, internships, industry partnerships and innovation programmes.
Emphasising the vision of “AI for All”, the two countries committed to promoting inclusive AI development, capacity building and knowledge sharing across the Indo-Pacific and the Global South.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s announcement that Japan will host the next AI Summit, reinforcing both countries’ commitment to advancing global cooperation on responsible AI development.
