Kolkata, 7th July: Preliminary post-mortem findings in the murder of an 11-year-old girl in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas indicate sexual assault, severe head injuries and drowning while she was still alive, police said.
The girl had gone missing on Saturday after leaving her home in Baruipur to buy a birthday gift for a friend. Her body, stuffed inside a sack, was recovered from a pond on Sunday.
According to police, the post-mortem found injury marks on her private parts, along with scratch and bite marks on different parts of her body. It also indicated that she sustained a serious head injury, either from a heavy blow or by being struck against a hard surface.
Investigators said the report suggests the child was alive when she was thrown into the pond, with water found in her lungs and stomach. Excessive bleeding from the head injury, combined with drowning, is believed to have caused her death.
Police have arrested the main accused, taking the total number of arrests in the case to three. CCTV footage reportedly shows the girl being taken away by four persons, and investigators are analysing the footage along with forensic evidence and witness statements to identify all those involved.
A local resident was lynched by an angry mob on Sunday after being suspected of involvement in the crime. Police said the investigation is continuing and all evidence is being examined.
