PM Announces New Agreements on Defence, Technology, Healthcare and Maritime Cooperation

Jakarta, 7th July: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said India and Indonesia have entered a “golden new chapter” in bilateral relations as the two countries signed a series of agreements to deepen cooperation in defence, technology, healthcare, education and the maritime sector.
Addressing a joint press statement with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in Jakarta, Modi said the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership established in 2018 has gained new momentum, with both nations expanding cooperation across development, security, technology, culture and education.
The Prime Minister said both countries agreed to strengthen defence exchanges, disaster management, maritime security, blue economy cooperation, port development and maritime trade. The two Coast Guards will also work together to enhance safety and security in the Indian Ocean.
Modi said India would support Indonesia through cooperation in healthcare, capacity building for medical professionals, affordable medicines, wheat seed supply, sustainable agriculture and agri-technology. He also announced agreements on artificial intelligence, telecommunications, Digital Public Infrastructure and startup collaboration.
The Prime Minister said the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore will establish its overseas campus in Indonesia, benefiting students across the ASEAN region. The two countries also agreed to expand cooperation in space research, critical minerals, steel supply chains and rare earth magnets.
Highlighting people-to-people ties, Modi announced that India’s UPI payment system would soon be integrated with Indonesia’s payment network, easing business and travel between the two countries.
He also announced the launch of the Prambanan Temple conservation project and said India and Indonesia would jointly celebrate the centenary of Rabindranath Tagore’s visit to Indonesia as the “Tagore-Dewantara Year of Cultural and Educational Diplomacy.”
Reaffirming India’s support for ASEAN centrality and a free, open Indo-Pacific, Modi said dialogue and diplomacy remain essential amid global uncertainty and reiterated India’s support for a two-state solution to the Palestine issue.
