New Delhi, 26th May: Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has approved a ₹1,427.61 crore infrastructure project for construction of a four-lane Thiruvarur Bypass and additional road over bridges in Tamil Nadu.

According to the Ministry, the 14.9-km bypass will be developed on the Nagapattinam–Thanjavur section of NH-83 and will also include construction of two additional Road Over Bridges (ROBs) on NH-129A and NH-134A.

Announcing the decision on X, Gadkari said the project would strengthen connectivity between industrial centres such as Tiruchirappalli and Coimbatore with the port towns of Karaikal and Nagapattinam, boosting regional economic activity.

The proposed bypass alignment will begin from Adiyakkamangalam–Thandalai and pass through several areas including Athipuliyur, Andipalayam, Kidaramkondan, Pallivaramangalam, Perumpugalur, Elavangarkudi and Anaivadapathy Colony.

Officials said the project is expected to significantly decongest Thiruvarur town by diverting heavy traffic away from densely populated and commercial areas.

The ministry said the bypass will reduce travel time by nearly 15 minutes and improve overall road safety in the region.

The project will also strengthen connectivity to State Highways 23 and 65, besides improving access to the renowned Thyagaraja Temple.

Officials added that the highway expansion forms part of the Centre’s broader push to modernise transport infrastructure and improve logistics efficiency across southern India.
