New Delhi, 23rd May: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in a major mining accident in China’s Shanxi province.
In a message posted on X, the Prime Minister conveyed condolences on behalf of the people of India to Xi Jinping and the people of China following the deadly coal mine explosion.
“Saddened by the loss of lives in a mining accident in Shanxi Province in China. On behalf of the people of India, my condolences to President Xi Jinping and the people of China,” Modi said.
The Prime Minister also prayed for strength for the bereaved families and wished for the safe recovery of those still missing after the accident.
The incident occurred at the Liushenyu coal mine in Qinyuan County of Shanxi province, where a gas explosion reportedly trapped hundreds of workers underground.
According to Chinese state media and international reports, at least 90 miners have died, making it China’s deadliest mining disaster in more than 16 years. Several workers are still reported missing, while many others have been hospitalised.
Rescue operations involving hundreds of emergency personnel are continuing at the site as Chinese authorities investigate the cause of the explosion.
President Xi Jinping has reportedly ordered all-out rescue efforts and called for strict accountability and enhanced industrial safety measures following the tragedy.
The accident has once again raised concerns over safety standards in China’s coal mining sector despite years of regulatory reforms and safety improvements.
