Chennai, 7th May: Actor-politician Vijay, widely seen as Tamil Nadu’s chief minister-designate, was on Wednesday evening spotted travelling without his full protocol security convoy, signalling a shift amid delays in government formation.

The visuals triggered speculation, but police officials clarified that the move was voluntary. “Basic pilot security will continue. Vijay opted out of the full protocol convoy following the delay in swearing-in,” a senior officer said.

Such convoys are typically extended to a chief minister-designate to ensure smooth movement and public convenience. The rollback comes as uncertainty continues over Vijay’s oath-taking ceremony, which was expected earlier but has now been postponed.

Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has emerged as the single largest force but remains 11 seats short of the majority mark in the 234-member Assembly.

The Indian National Congress has extended support with five MLAs, but the party still needs at least six more legislators to secure a majority.

Sources indicate that TVK is in talks with Left parties such as the Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist), and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, which together hold the numbers required to push it past the majority threshold.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Governor R. N. Ravi has reportedly asked Vijay to submit a list of 118 supporting MLAs before inviting him to form the government.

With negotiations intensifying, the delay in swearing-in is now influencing even protocol arrangements, highlighting how the numbers game continues to dictate the course of power in Tamil Nadu.
