New Delhi, 23rd May: The Supreme Court of India has taken suo motu cognisance of the death case of Twisha Sharma, whose family has accused her husband and in-laws of harassment and wrongdoing.
The matter has been listed for hearing on May 25 before a bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant.
The bench will also comprise Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice Vipul M Pancholi.
According to the Supreme Court cause list, the matter has been registered under the title: “Alleged institutional bias and procedural discrepancies in the unnatural death of a young girl at her matrimonial home.”
Twisha Sharma, a resident of Noida, was found dead at her matrimonial home in Bhopal earlier this month.
Her family has alleged harassment by her husband and in-laws and raised concerns over the manner in which the investigation was conducted.
The case has drawn national attention following allegations of procedural lapses, questions over the post-mortem process and claims of interference in the investigation.
Earlier, the Madhya Pradesh High Court had ordered a second post-mortem examination to be conducted by doctors from AIIMS Delhi in Bhopal.
Twisha’s husband Samarth Singh was recently arrested after evading police for several days, while his mother Giribala Singh has faced allegations of influencing the probe.
The Supreme Court’s decision to take up the matter suo motu is being viewed as a major development in the high-profile case.
