Leh, 13th Aug: A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck Leh in Ladakh early Thursday morning, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).
The tremor occurred at 6:05 AM IST at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres. The NCS said the earthquake was recorded at latitude 36.881° N and longitude 74.402° E.
In a post on X, the NCS stated: “EQ of M: 5.5, On: 13/08/2026 06:05:15 IST, Lat: 36.881 N, Long: 74.402 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Leh, Ladakh.”
There were no immediate reports of casualties or major structural damage, and authorities are assessing the situation.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), earthquakes are classified by depth into shallow, intermediate and deep categories. Shallow earthquakes, which occur at depths of up to 70 kilometres, generally produce stronger ground shaking because seismic waves travel a shorter distance to the Earth’s surface, making them potentially more damaging than deeper earthquakes.
Officials have not issued any tsunami or aftershock warnings, and further updates are awaited.
