New Delhi, 29th Sept: Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region and Communications Jyotiraditya M. Scindia on Tuesday launched the trailer of the documentary series ‘The Enchanting 8: A Culinary Journey Through the Northeast’ in New Delhi.

The trailer launch was organised by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) and was attended by Minister of State for MDoNER Dr Sukanta Majumdar, senior ministry officials and members of the production team.

The documentary series seeks to bring the culinary traditions, diverse communities and cultural heritage of the eight Northeastern states to a wider national audience through food and the people associated with it.

Food at the heart of Northeast storytelling
Supported by MDoNER and the North Eastern Council (NEC), the series has been implemented through the North Eastern Region Community Resource Management Society (NERCRMS). It has been produced by Urban Media Productions in association with Filandering Forker Media.

The series follows a food-led journey across the Northeast, exploring how local cuisines are shaped by geography, indigenous knowledge, locally available resources and community traditions.

Rather than presenting the Northeast through a single culinary identity, the documentary focuses on the distinct food practices and cultural traditions of individual communities across the region.

Local communities and producers drive the narrative
A key feature of the series is its bottom-up storytelling approach, with local communities, farmers and food producers placed at the centre of the narrative.

The production team interacted with communities and food producers to trace native ingredients from their origins to kitchens and, ultimately, the dining table. These encounters document not only the preparation and consumption of food but also the traditions, knowledge and stories associated with it.

The trailer provides glimpses of the region through its food and the people who prepare and share it, with local voices carrying much of the narrative.

Beyond food: Culture, arts and landscapes
While cuisine remains the central theme, the documentary also explores the arts, culture and landscapes of Northeast India, presenting them as part of the social and geographical setting in which the region’s food traditions have developed.

The series uses ingredients, kitchens and everyday food practices as an entry point to showcase the wider cultural diversity of the Northeast.

According to MDoNER, the initiative represents a cultural outreach effort aimed at taking authentic stories from the region to audiences beyond the Northeast and highlighting the communities and traditions that shape its identity.

The launch of the trailer marks the beginning of the documentary journey across all eight Northeastern states.
