Ladakh, 25th Sept: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday flagged in the First Ascent Mountaineering Expedition after a team from the National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS), Dirang, successfully summited 20 previously unclimbed peaks above 6,000 metres in Ladakh in 23 days.
The expedition marks the first-ever recorded summits of 20 unclimbed peaks in the Chamser-Lungser, Gyama Nala and Chokula areas of the Ladakh Range, according to the Ministry of Defence. The 20-member team was led by Col Ranveer Singh Jamwal.
Interacting with the expedition members at the flag-in ceremony, Rajnath Singh commended the climbers for their courage, determination and teamwork. He described the achievement as a demonstration of India’s capabilities in mountaineering and adventure sports.
The expedition involved high-altitude climbing across challenging terrain and highlighted the importance of planning, technical expertise, endurance and coordinated teamwork. According to the Defence Ministry, the mission was organised to promote adventure and exploration in high-altitude frontier areas and encourage future generations of mountaineers.
The successful ascents also add to India’s high-altitude mountaineering activities in Ladakh. The Defence Ministry said the expedition reflects the country’s capabilities in high-altitude mountaineering and strengthens India’s presence on the global mountaineering map.
The expedition team comprises 20 highly skilled climbers from NIMAS, an institute based in Dirang. Col Ranveer Singh Jamwal led the team during the 23-day mission.
The flag-in ceremony was held at Kartavya Bhavan-2 in New Delhi. Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and other senior officials of the Ministry of Defence were also present.
