New Delhi, 12th Aug: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday highlighted India’s conservation efforts for elephants on the occasion of World Elephant Day, noting that the country is home to more than 60 per cent of the world’s wild Asian elephants.
In a message shared on X, the Prime Minister said the elephant has remained an integral part of India’s ecological heritage and underlined the importance of protecting the species and its habitats.
India currently has 33 Elephant Reserves, which provide dedicated habitats for elephants and support long-term conservation efforts, the Prime Minister said.
Modi also acknowledged the contribution of forest personnel, scientists, veterinarians, mahouts and local communities to elephant conservation.
“On World Elephant Day, we celebrate the majestic elephant which has remained an integral part of India’s ecological heritage,” the Prime Minister said, adding that India’s elephant reserves strengthen the country’s efforts towards their long-term conservation.
He also expressed pride in those working on the ground to protect elephants and preserve their habitats.
