Bolpur, 28th Sept: A 46-year-old booth-level BJP worker was allegedly shot dead in the Trishulapatty locality of Bolpur in West Bengal’s Birbhum district on Sunday evening, police said.

The deceased was identified as Chandan Bhalla. Birbhum Superintendent of Police Vidit Raj Bhundesh said preliminary findings indicated that Bhalla appeared to have died from a gunshot injury. The exact cause of death will be established after the post-mortem examination, he said.

Police have launched an investigation to identify those responsible. Reports said investigators are examining CCTV footage and forensic evidence from the area. Police are also looking into whether the killing was politically motivated or linked to personal enmity.

According to Bhalla’s family, he received a phone call from an unidentified person before leaving his home. Further details about the caller and the circumstances that led him to leave home are part of the ongoing investigation.

Local reports said two motorcycle-borne assailants allegedly approached Bhalla in the Trishulapatty area before fleeing after the shooting. These details are being examined by investigators and have not been established as the official sequence of events.

Shyamapada Mondal, president of the BJP’s Bolpur organisational district, described Bhalla as an “old and active worker” of the party and called for swift police action.

“It is very unfortunate that our party worker has been shot dead. We want the police administration to act within 24 hours,” Mondal said.

The motive behind the killing has not yet been established. While some family members have raised allegations of a political connection, police are investigating multiple possible angles.
