Bengaluru, 11th Aug: Actor Prakash Raj on Tuesday claimed that his voter ID had been deleted from the electoral rolls in Bengaluru during Karnataka’s ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, alleging that he was among millions of voters affected by the revision.
In a video posted on Instagram, the actor said he was “one of the 65 lakh voters whose voter right has been deleted” from the Bengaluru constituency. He stated that he was born, educated and has spent most of his life in the constituency, adding that he had also contested the 2019 Lok Sabha election as an Independent candidate from Bengaluru Central.
Questioning the revision process, Prakash Raj said he would now have to determine the documents required to restore his voter registration. He also criticised the exercise, asserting that while authorities could remove names from electoral rolls, they could not suppress the democratic voice of citizens.
The remarks come amid Karnataka’s ongoing SIR exercise, which has identified a large number of electors under the ASDDO (Absent, Shifted, Duplicate, Dead and Others) category during house-to-house verification.
According to the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), 1,09,83,901 electors, or 19.81 per cent of the state’s 5.54 crore registered voters, have been categorised under ASDDO.
Bengaluru Urban recorded the highest number of such cases, with 17,74,626 electors, accounting for 44.13 per cent of the city’s voter base. Within the city, BBMP South reported the highest proportion, with 10,87,829 ASDDO cases, representing 50.72 per cent of its electorate.
The Election Commission has extended the deadline for the enumeration phase of the SIR exercise to August 17. The draft electoral rolls will be published on August 24, while claims and objections can be filed until September 23. The final electoral rolls are scheduled for publication on October 27.
Last month, Prakash Raj was granted conditional bail by a Bengaluru court in a separate case related to allegations of possessing multiple voter identity cards. The matter remains under judicial consideration.
