Pune IT Engineer Dies by Suicide Months After Marriage

Pune, 28th Sept: A 23-year-old IT engineer, Vaishnavi Pravin Jarande, died by suicide months after her marriage, with her family alleging mental and physical harassment by her husband and in-laws over an additional dowry demand.

Vaishnavi married Omkar Sanjay Ghisare on May 9. According to her family’s complaint, around ₹45 lakh was spent on the wedding and 10 tolas of gold were given. The family alleged that her husband and in-laws subsequently demanded another ₹5 lakh to purchase a car.

After marriage, Vaishnavi lived with her husband’s family. She later moved to Bengaluru for work and returned to Pune at the end of June, continuing her job with an IT company while staying at her matrimonial home.

Her family alleged that she was subjected to mental and physical harassment by her husband, mother-in-law and father-in-law.

According to the complaint, Vaishnavi called her mother on the night of September 24 and spoke about the alleged harassment at her marital home.

Later that night, around 11:30 pm, her husband also contacted her parental family by phone.

When the family was subsequently unable to contact Vaishnavi, her parents travelled to Pune. They were informed after reaching the city that Vaishnavi had died at her residence.

Based on a complaint filed by her father, police registered a case against Omkar Sanjay Ghisare and his parents.

The police are investigating the case under provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act and charges relating to abetment of suicide. Officials are examining the allegations, the circumstances surrounding the death and available evidence. The exact facts of the case are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
