Mark Carney says PM Modi expected to visit Canada in Dec to sign trade deal

NEW YORK – Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney on Wednesday said that the two sides are looking forward to reaching a trade deal by the end of this year.
Narendra Modi is expected to visit Canada in December, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said in New York.
He highlighted that Ottawa is making “good progress” in its trade negotiations with Delhi.
According to CBC News, Carney stated that the two sides are looking forward to reaching a trade deal by the end of this year.
The remarks from the Canadian PM came in response to a question regarding when PM Modi will visit the country and how close Canada is to concluding a free trade deal with India.
“We are making good progress in our trade negotiations with India. It is an exceptionally important relationship on many, many levels. People-to-people levels, security levels, and also trade and economics,” Carney said during a press conference on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly high-level session.
He noted that Modi and he had committed at the G20 last year to “look to conclude negotiations by the G20 this year”.
US President Donald Trump is scheduled to host the G20 Summit on December 14–15 at the Trump National Doral Miami resort in Doral, Florida.
Both nations reopened trade talks last year during the G20 Summit.
Carney stated that the goal was to conclude negotiations by the G20 this year, set for mid-December.
“I believe that India just confirmed that the Prime Minister will be visiting Canada around that time. The precise date isn’t out, but I very much look forward to hosting him,” he added.
PM Modi last visited Canada to attend the G7 Summit in June 2025 at the invitation of Carney.
