Chandigarh, Aug 8: Punjab Police on Saturday arrested the third accused in the Batala grenade attack case during a joint intelligence-led operation by Counter Intelligence (CI) Jalandhar and Batala Police, marking another breakthrough in the investigation.
The arrested accused has been identified as Karanjit Singh alias Bacha, a resident of Murgi Mohalla in Batala. According to Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav, preliminary investigations have revealed that he was an operative of an ISI-backed terror module allegedly being run by a Portugal-based mastermind of the banned Babbar Khalsa International (BKI).
Police said the accused had gone into hiding after the grenade attack on the Police Post Urban Estate in Batala on August 1 and was allegedly planning similar attacks on police establishments across Punjab. He was apprehended based on technical surveillance and human intelligence inputs.
The arrest follows the earlier detention of two accused, including Rajan alias Gullu and a juvenile, in connection with the same attack.
DGP Gaurav Yadav said further investigation is underway to identify foreign handlers, local support networks and establish the complete conspiracy behind the terror module.
A case has already been registered at Police Station Civil Lines, Batala, under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Explosive Substances Act.
