Tarun Tejpal Gets 10-Year Jail Term in Rape Case

Pune, 6th Aug: The Goa Bench of the Bombay High Court on Thursday sentenced former Tehelka Editor-in-Chief Tarun Tejpal to 10 years in prison after convicting him in the 2013 rape case involving a junior colleague.

The court highlighted the professional power imbalance between Tejpal, who was Editor-in-Chief of Tehelka at the time, and the complainant, a junior journalist working with the publication. Tejpal has sought eight weeks to surrender.

Speaking to reporters after his conviction, the 62-year-old former journalist maintained his innocence and alleged that he had been targeted for years due to political vendetta linked to Tehelka’s journalism.

Tejpal said he had faith that the judicial process would ultimately establish what he described as the truth and announced that he would challenge the High Court verdict before the Supreme Court.

He also referred to jailed activists Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam and lawyer Surendra Gadling while alleging that he had similarly been targeted because of Tehelka’s past reportage.

Tehelka gained national prominence in 2001 following Operation West End, an undercover investigation in which its journalists posed as arms dealers and secretly recorded officials and political figures in connection with a fictitious defence deal.

During proceedings, Tejpal sought leniency from the court, citing his age and family circumstances while reiterating his claim that he considered himself a victim.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Goa government, sought the maximum punishment, arguing that Tejpal had abused his position and had failed to respect the complainant’s refusal.

The case dates back to November 2013, when the complainant accused Tejpal of sexually assaulting her twice inside an elevator at a Goa hotel during ThinkFest, an event associated with Tehelka. Tejpal was arrested on November 30, 2013.

Following the High Court verdict, the survivor’s mother said the decision had brought relief after a prolonged legal battle, describing the years since the incident as painful and thanking the Goa government and its lawyers for pursuing the case.
