Sri Vijaya Puram, Aug 8: Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan on Saturday paid homage to India’s freedom fighters at the historic Cellular Jail in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, remembering their sacrifices in the country’s struggle for independence.
During his visit, the Vice President laid a wreath at the Martyrs’ Column, paid tribute at Veer Savarkar’s cell, and visited the Swatantra Jyoti, Central Tower, Gallows, Museum and Exhibition Gallery. He also witnessed the Light and Sound Show depicting the history of India’s freedom movement.
Addressing the gathering, Radhakrishnan described Veer Savarkar as a fearless revolutionary whose patriotism inspired generations. Recalling Savarkar’s imprisonment in the Cellular Jail, he said the British intended to break the spirit of freedom fighters but failed to demoralise Savarkar, adding that “finally, the British Raj got demoralised.” He also highlighted Savarkar’s contributions towards fighting untouchability and social discrimination.
The Vice President said India’s aspiration to become stronger is not to dominate others but to ensure that the nation is never dictated to by anyone, describing that as the essence of true freedom.
Earlier in the day, Radhakrishnan received a ceremonial Guard of Honour after arriving at INS Utkrosh in Sri Vijaya Puram. He is on a two-day visit to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, during which he will also launch the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign and visit Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Island.
