Congress MLA Yashavanta Patil Resigns Over Indi’s Exclusion from Drought-Hit List

Bengaluru, 24th Sept: Congress MLA Yashwanthrayagouda Patil of Karnataka’s Indi Assembly constituency has submitted his resignation from the state Legislative Assembly, protesting the exclusion of Indi and Chadachan taluks in Vijayapura district from the government’s drought-hit list.

Patil submitted his resignation letter to Assembly Speaker G.S. Patil. In the letter dated September 22, he said he was unable to meet the expectations and aspirations of the people of his constituency because of the failure to declare Indi taluk drought-hit despite repeated representations.

According to Patil’s letter, Indi was severely affected during the 2026-27 kharif season. He said that although there was some rainfall at the beginning of the season, farmers subsequently faced a lack of timely rain, resulting in crops drying up. He also referred to shortages of drinking water for people and livestock.

Patil said he had submitted a representation to the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister on August 28 seeking drought-hit status for Indi. He pointed out that 11 of Vijayapura district’s 13 taluks had been included in the drought-hit list, leaving Indi and Chadachan outside it.

The MLA also expressed dissatisfaction with what he described in his resignation letter as the greater consideration being given to influential individuals and those using pressure tactics, while the concerns raised by leaders adopting a more moderate approach were not receiving adequate attention.

The resignation has triggered discussion in the Karnataka Assembly amid a wider debate over drought management in the state. Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar said he had spoken to Patil and understood the pressure on the MLA from people in his constituency. The government has maintained that drought declarations have to follow prescribed parameters and assessment procedures.

Patil had also submitted his resignation earlier this year after not being included in the state Cabinet expansion, but subsequently withdrew it following discussions with Congress leaders. His latest resignation is linked in his letter to the drought status of Indi and Chadachan.

However, subsequent reports said the Speaker did not accept the resignation because it was not submitted in the prescribed format.

Patil has maintained that his decision is connected to the concerns of residents of his constituency and the demand for drought relief measures for the affected taluks.
