Union Home Minister cites GDP growth, rating upgrades and defence manufacturing while hitting back at critics of India’s economic performance

New Delhi, 26th Sept: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday slammed those questioning India’s economic performance, citing recent growth figures, sovereign rating upgrades and expanding defence manufacturing to argue that the economy has maintained momentum despite global turbulence.
Addressing the Uttar Pradesh International Trade Show 2026, Shah said Moody’s had raised its growth forecast for India from 6% to 7%, while Japan Credit Rating Agency (JCR) had upgraded India’s sovereign rating from BBB+ to A-. He also cited a 7.8% growth rate recorded in the last quarter.
“There are some cynical individuals who attempt to discredit India’s GDP figures,” Shah said, adding that India had not only sustained its growth rate but accelerated it despite global challenges.
Shah said the government remained committed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s stated goal of making India a leading global economy by 2047.
“Despite global turmoil, unrest, and numerous hurdles, India has not only sustained its growth rate but accelerated it,” he said.
Responding to descriptions of the Indian economy as a “dead economy”, Shah said critics were unable to recognise the country’s economic activity and growth.
“Those whose own mindset is ‘dead’ cannot see vibrancy,” he said.
The Union minister also highlighted India’s Free Trade Agreements with several countries, saying they had expanded export opportunities for Indian industries.
Shah pointed to investments across all six nodes of the Uttar Pradesh Defence Corridor — Jhansi, Chitrakoot, Lucknow, Agra, Aligarh and Kanpur — as evidence of growing defence manufacturing capacity.
He said the investments were contributing to the development of defence products in Uttar Pradesh as well as across the country.
Referring to indigenous defence production, Shah highlighted BrahMos missiles manufactured in Uttar Pradesh and AK-203 assault rifles produced in Amethi, linking them to the state’s growing role in defence manufacturing.
