Lucknow, 29th Sept: Former Uttar Pradesh-cadre IAS officer Divya Mittal has announced her entry into politics, days after her resignation from the administrative service was accepted. She said her political journey would begin in Uttar Pradesh but made it clear that she would not join any political party.
In a video message released on Tuesday, Mittal said she wanted to become a voice for people whose concerns often remain unheard in government offices. She said she would enter politics without aligning herself with any party and would work directly with citizens.
“Politics,” Mittal said while answering the question of what she planned to do next. She described Uttar Pradesh as her “karmabhoomi” and said the state would be the starting point of her political journey.
Focus on accountability and public issues
Mittal said her decision was shaped partly by experiences during her administrative career. Recalling her tenure in Mirzapur, she referred to a woman who had sought a school beyond Class 5 in her village.
According to Mittal, she examined the relevant rules and approved the school, but construction had still not begun three years later. She cited the experience while arguing for greater accountability in the functioning of government institutions.
She also raised issues concerning roads and bridges in rural areas, poor infrastructure and difficulties faced by villagers during the monsoon.
Raises concerns over youth and employment
The former bureaucrat also spoke about examination paper leaks, lengthy recruitment processes and the potential impact of artificial intelligence on employment.
As a mother of two daughters, she said she was concerned about the future that young people would face. She argued that political debate should also address longer-term questions concerning education, employment and governance.
Mittal said she wanted to pursue politics with people rather than “with any party” and appealed to teachers, farmers, students, doctors, workers and lawyers to participate in her initiative.
From civil services to politics
A 2013-batch IAS officer, Mittal served in Uttar Pradesh and held District Magistrate posts in districts including Mirzapur and Deoria. She resigned from the IAS after nearly 13 years of service, with her resignation taking effect in September 2026.
Her resignation had triggered speculation about her next move. In the days preceding Tuesday’s announcement, Mittal had indicated that she would reveal her plans on September 29.
Her announcement now establishes her stated political route, although she has not announced affiliation with any political party or specified a particular electoral constituency.
