New Delhi, 7th Aug: Rajya Sabha Chairman on Friday paid tribute to the freedom fighters and martyrs of the Quit India Movement, recalling their courage and sacrifices ahead of the movement’s 84th anniversary on August 9.
Addressing the House, the Chairman described the Quit India Movement as one of the defining milestones in India’s freedom struggle and recalled that it was launched under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi on August 9, 1942.
He said Gandhi’s clarion call of “Do or Die” inspired millions of Indians to rise above barriers and unite for the common objective of securing the country’s independence.
The Chairman noted that despite severe repression, imprisonment and hardships, freedom fighters demonstrated extraordinary courage, determination and unwavering commitment to independence.
“Their selfless sacrifices and steadfast resolve strengthened the national movement and paved the way for the country to attain independence in 1947,” he said.
Calling upon the nation to remember those who participated in the movement, the Chairman said their ideals of patriotism, unity, sacrifice and dedication continue to inspire India in its endeavour to build a strong, prosperous and inclusive nation.
He then requested members of the House to rise and observe silence as a mark of respect to the memory of the freedom struggle’s brave souls.
The Quit India Movement, launched in 1942, became a crucial phase of India’s struggle against British colonial rule and intensified the nationwide demand for independence.
