CHENGALPATTU, 7th Aug: The divorce proceedings involving Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief C Joseph Vijay and his wife Sangeetha Sornalingam came to an end after Sangeetha withdrew her petition before a family court in Chengalpattu.

Sangeetha appeared before the court through video conferencing and submitted her reasons for withdrawing the divorce plea. Following her submission, the court formally closed the proceedings.

She had filed for divorce in February this year, seeking dissolution of her marriage with Vijay on the grounds of irreconcilable differences. The petition also sought permanent alimony and permission to continue residing at the couple’s matrimonial home in Neelankarai, Chennai.

The case had witnessed several adjournments over the past few months. On June 15, proceedings were adjourned after Sangeetha indicated that she intended to withdraw her petition. Appearing virtually during that hearing, she informed the court about her decision, following which the matter was posted for further hearing.

On other occasions, both Vijay and Sangeetha remained absent from the proceedings, with their lawyers appearing on their behalf and citing difficulties in attending personally.

Friday’s order formally closed the case following the withdrawal of the petition.

Vijay and Sangeetha Married in 1999
Vijay and Sangeetha married on August 25, 1999, in a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony in Chennai. The couple have two children — a son born in 2000 and a daughter born in 2005.

Speculation surrounding their marriage intensified in 2023 after Sangeetha was absent from several prominent public events involving Vijay. Similar questions resurfaced after she stayed away from major political programmes organised by TVK.

Vijay subsequently emerged as a major political figure in Tamil Nadu, with TVK forming the state government following the Assembly elections with support from its coalition partners.
