Madurai, 28th Sept: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Monday launched the Maternal Uncle Gold Ring Scheme (Thaaimaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam) for newborn babies, fulfilling a key electoral promise of the state government.
The scheme was launched at the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai, where Vijay held newborn babies and presented them with gold rings.
The Tamil Nadu government has earmarked ₹755.83 crore for the welfare initiative.
The scheme is aimed at honouring motherhood, promoting women’s health and encouraging institutional deliveries by attracting more families to government healthcare facilities.
Under the initial rollout, the state government has already procured 1.28 lakh 22-carat gold rings, which will be distributed to eligible children born in state-run hospitals to native mothers.
The scheme applies to eligible babies born on or after June 22, 2026.
The Chief Minister’s visit prompted extensive security arrangements in Madurai, with police deploying a five-tier security system from the airport in view of his multiple programmes in the city.
The gold ring scheme is among the welfare measures being implemented by the state government with a focus on maternal and child welfare and encouraging families to opt for institutional healthcare.
