New Delhi, 13th Aug: India Optel Limited (IOL), a Mini Ratna Category-I Defence Public Sector Undertaking under the Department of Defence Production, has launched the indigenous GARUD High Resolution Binoculars for the civilian market, marking its entry into India’s commercial optics segment.
Developed and manufactured by Ordnance Factory, Dehradun, a unit of India Optel Limited, the GARUD binoculars have been designed and built entirely in India, reflecting the Government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The product leverages the defence PSU’s optical manufacturing expertise, which dates back to 1943.
The GARUD binoculars feature 8x magnification and a 7.6-degree field of view, enabling users to observe distant objects while maintaining a broad viewing angle. The device also includes ±5 diopter adjustment for individual eyesight correction, soft-touch eyecups for extended comfort, an ergonomic grip and a weather-resistant body for reliable outdoor use.
Weighing around 610 grams, the binoculars are designed for applications including birdwatching, wildlife observation, nature exploration, travel, sports, forestry, marine activities and security-related operations.
According to India Optel Limited, the product is based on a binocular platform that has been extensively used by the Indian Armed Forces and Central Armed Police Forces in demanding operational environments. The launch aims to make India’s defence-grade optical technology accessible to outdoor enthusiasts and professional users in the civilian market.
The GARUD High Resolution Binoculars were launched at DPSU Bhawan, New Delhi, in the presence of Joint Secretary (Land Systems) Dr. Garima Bhagat. Senior officials from the Department of Defence Production, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Central Armed Police Forces, the Wildlife Society of India, and members of the Board of Directors and senior officers of India Optel Limited attended the event.
